while watching a crock pot cooking show on pbs, reference was made to "dirty potatoes", described as mashed potatoes with horseradish and onions, and the skin is left on the potatoes. that's all I know about it (I'm wondering is there garlic or butter also ?). this show was in the philly PA area. I have done some searching online to no avail. any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Bill

When I make my garlic smashed potatoes, I add butter, milk and a scoop of sour cream. I would use those when attempting the dirty potatoes.

I have not heard of dirty potatoes, but they do sound good. If you do not get any other suggestions, try this...this recipe is off the top of my head and you can adjust it to your taste. This is what I would try for a recipe.

6 large red potatoes, cut and quartered, boiled till tender. Mash with potato masher.

Sautee

1/2 chopped red onion
two cloves garlic

While potatoes are still hot add onion and garlic, 1/4 cup butter, large scoop sour cream and enough milk to make desired consistency. Add salt (I omit this) and pepper to taste. Add enough horseradish to desired taste as well.

Hope this helps!

It seems to me like you just described the makings for the recipe. Boil up some of your favorite potatoes for mashed potatoes, don't peal the postoes, mash them up as you would normally do, then add in enough horseraddish and sauted onions to suit your taste, or boil some chopped onions with the potatoes.

Here's a link to Dirty Mashed Potatoes from (Barry squints, makes himself very small, controls his nausea and says) Emeril.
